Heavyweight Boxing
London, UK (July 27, 2024) - Rising British heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma (10-0, 8 KOs) made a significant statement on the undercard of the Joyce-Chisora bout at the O2 Arena in London. The 19-year-old prodigy delivered a stunning second-round stoppage of veteran Mariusz Wach (38-11, 20 KOs), a seasoned fighter known for his durability against some of the heavyweight division's best.
Moses Itauma, who has been making waves in the boxing world, faced his most experienced opponent to date in Wach, who has shared the ring with notable names like Wladimir Klitschko, Hughie Fury, Dillian Whyte, and Frazer Clarke. Wach, now 44 years old, has been known for his ability to go the distance, but Itauma was determined to make a statement.
In the first round, Itauma showcased his impressive boxing IQ, using feints and jabs to assess Wach's ability to defend. His composure and tactical approach hinted at a maturity beyond his years. However, the real fireworks began in the second round when Itauma upped the tempo and launched a relentless assault on Wach.
Itauma's power and precision were on full display as he unleashed a barrage of punches that overwhelmed the veteran and sent him to the canvas. The follow-up combination of body shots and head punches backed Wach into a neutral corner, where Itauma continued his onslaught. The referee, Michael Alexander, was left with no choice but to step in and halt the fight to prevent further damage, marking a significant milestone in Itauma's young career.
Reflecting on his victory, Itauma stated, “I don’t want to badmouth anyone but Wach was known for taking people the distance. The earliest I think he was ever stopped was around six rounds but I have done him in two, so it is a statement. He has been in there with the likes of Klitschko and Dillian Whyte and they have not done that to him. It lets the heavyweight division know I am here, I am only 19 but come on. But I want to say thank you to Mariusz because nobody else wanted to take the fight.”
The victory over Wach has sent ripples through the heavyweight division. Former world champion and commentator Carl Froch lauded Itauma's performance, describing it as one of Britain's best boxing displays of the year. Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren, who has been guiding Itauma's career, hinted that Frazer Clarke might be the next opponent for the rising star.
Itauma's victory not only boosts his confidence but also positions him as a future contender in the heavyweight division. At just 19 years old, his combination of skill, power, and ring intelligence suggests a bright future ahead.
